12 Days of Giving: Sensory Certification and Inclusion

Did you know that as many as 1 in 6 school-aged children demonstrate symptoms of sensory processing disorder —a condition that affects how your brain processes information from sight, hearing, smell, taste, or touch?

Individuals with sensory processing differences face many barriers that can impact their ability to engage with the community. Going out into the community to experience common things like getting a haircut or attending a sporting event can be overwhelming.

People with sensory processing differences or dysfunction experience a sensory processing “traffic jam.” A disconnect occurs when information travels to the sensory processing center of their brains. They may feel overwhelmed by everyday situations because they become overstimulated, leading to meltdowns, or experience a shutdown of emotions to the stimuli.

Sensory differences can result in increased anxiety and behaviors, resulting in decreased social functioning and decreased quality of life. These difficulties can persist throughout a lifespan, if not addressed.

At Fraser, we offer treatment options catered to each individual’s unique sensory needs. Click here to learn how sensory processing affects individuals differently, and listen to Gina Gibson, Fraser Sensory Inclusion Specialist, in this FraserCast episode to hear more about the importance of creating sensory friendly environments.

Fraser addresses individual sensory difficulties through occupational therapy services, but we also work with the community to make more experiences responsive to people with sensory processing difficulties. The Fraser Sensory Certification program offers businesses and organizations customizable training that creates positive sensory experiences for their consumers.

Achieving Fraser Sensory Certification lets the community know that a business welcomes people of all sensory abilities and signals that they will be supported throughout their experience. For more information on how to complete a sensory certification for your business, visit our Sensory Certification page and fill out our online contact form.

Fraser is working to create an inclusive environment for individuals of all abilities. Your contribution purchases tools and resources to support individuals and families affected by sensory processing difficulties.

Thank you for making our community welcoming for everyone.
